DGN- MicroStation Design File

What is .DGN File Format and How to Open it?

A .DGN file is a two-dimensional or three-dimensional vector graphic file created with MicroStation, a CAD program developed by Bentley Systems. It contains a collection of drawing elements, such as text, lines, arcs, shapes, and images, as well as elements of a geographic information system (GIS), including coordinate systems, layers, and geographic features. DGN files can be used to create a variety of documents, including site plans, maps, construction documents, and engineering designs.

DGN files are typically composed of a collection of elements that are organized into layers. Each element is assigned a symbol and a color, which makes the elements easier to identify and manipulate. The files also store metadata, such as a description of the drawing, coordinates, and other information.

DGN files can be opened with MicroStation, as well as several other CAD programs. This includes AutoCAD, Solid Edge, DraftSight, and Vectorworks. Some programs, such as Autodesk’s AutoCAD, can export DGN files.

In addition, the free software Open Design Alliance Viewer can open DGN files, as well as several other CAD formats. The Open Design Alliance also provides software development kits (SDKs) that allow developers to create applications that can read and write DGN files.
