WIM-Windows Imaging File

What is .WIM File and How can be Open into the Desktop?

A WIM (Windows Imaging Format) file is a compressed file format used to store Windows installation files, applications, and system images. It is used to deploy and restore Windows operating systems on computers, servers, and other devices. WIM files are typically created from a master image file, and can be used to create a bootable Windows installation disc or USB drive.

To open a .WIM file on a desktop, you can use a third-party program such as WinRAR or 7-Zip. These programs will decompress the file and allow you to view and extract the individual files and folders inside. You can also use Microsoft’s ImageX utility to mount and open WIM files. This tool is included in the Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) and Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK). Once mounted, you can view the contents of the image file, as well as make changes to it.
